Pine Cone

This months pattern was shown to me while night fishing on Taneycomo.  I also watched Joe Shoemacker (from WAPSI) tie this fly.  It has been a big seller and one of my first flies I use when Streamer fishing for trout, panfish, smallies, large mouth bass and crappies.  I strip or swing this fly in all types of waters.

GOOD LUCK

Ingredients

Hook- MUSTAD 9672 #2 - #14 or any streamer hook (size #8 most commom)
Thread -6/0 color to match body
Weight - Bead Head (size appropriate ) or .025 lead or cone head
Tail - Pine Squirrel strips, any color (they all work)
Body - same Pine Squirrel strip
Collar - optional

Step 1

Tie on thread and coat hook shank with thread before bend and tie on Pine Squirrel strip (liair side
up).  Wrap about 10 times.  Keep strip on top of hook shank

Step 2

Wrap on .025 lead and wrap thread throught lead numerous times (to keep lead from sliding around)

You will end up the the thread at the hook eye

Step 4

Palmer Pine Squirrel strip around hook shank (every time you wrap the strip around the hook shank pull previous wrapped hair back towards the tail with opposite hand)   This makes the hair flow back towards the tail.  When you reach the head of the fly wrap the thread through hair at least 5-6 times.

Finished Pine Cone

Cut off extra strip of pine squirrel and with opposite hand stroke back of hair at the head of the fly and wrap
numerous times to form a head.  Then use head cement on the thread at the head of the fly.
